THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY ADHERENCE AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN HIV/AIDS PATIENTS:  A STUDY AT WELAS ASIH HOSPITAL

Abstract

One of the biggest global health concerns, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) still presents a significant obstacle, even in Indonesia. Patient adherence to treatment is essential for antiretroviral therapy (ARV) to be successful. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between ARV medication adherence and HIV/AIDS patients' quality of life. This study used a cross-sectional design and a quantitative design. 55 respondents in total were chosen by accident sampling from the population intended to be HIV/AIDS patients undergoing treatment at the Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Care, Support, and Treatment (CST) Clinic of RSUD Welas Asih. The World Health Organization Quality of Life – Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument was used to measure quality of life, and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) questionnaire was used to evaluate medication adherence. The Spearman rank correlation test was used for both univariate and bivariate analyses of the data. The results indicated that the majority of respondents had a good quality of life and a high degree of adherence to ARV therapy. According to statistical analysis, there is a significant correlation (p <0.05) between ARV medication adherence and HIV/AIDS patients' quality of life. In conclusion, quality of life and treatment adherence are significantly correlated. In order to maintain treatment adherence and improve the quality of life for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, healthcare providers are advised to improve education and support.
